Overview

There is significant responsibility on both those providing and purchasing new machinery, to ensure that it is safe for use at work. This course introduces delegates to the UK Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, which regulate the design, manufacture, and supply of machines. It will also cover integration of machines to form a complete assembly, or where responsibility lies with partially completed machines. It also explains the context and recognition of the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

Learning outcomes

Delegates will be provided with information that will help them to:

  • Understand the principles of the Essential Health and Safety Requirements that give inherent safety by design

  • Apply and reference Harmonised/ Designated Standards, understanding how these can give a Presumption of Conformity

  • Understand the types of standard and their representation of ‘state of the art’

  • Understand the fundamentals of machinery risk assessment and its role in hazard identification and risk reduction as part of machinery supply

  • Understand how a technical file should be built, when evaluate its content

  • Understand the regulatory implications for partly completed machinery and substantial modification

What the course will cover

This course aims to provide delegates with a comprehensive understanding of the UK Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, along with the essential British, European, and International safety standards that underpin these regulations and serve as a foundation for demonstrating compliance. The fundamental health and safety requirements of the regulations are elucidated to enhance delegates’ comprehension of how Standards can aid in machinery risk assessment from a Manufacturer's perspective. The course clarifies the distinctions between a Declaration of Conformity and a Declaration of Incorporation, while also presenting the use of the UKCA and current basis for the acceptance of the CE mark. Additionally, delegates will be familiarised with the structure and content of a Technical File, which includes identifying the necessary information for instructions, maintenance, and the ongoing safe operation of machinery.

Who should attend?

This course is designed mainly for individuals tasked with specifying or reviewing new machinery before its implementation. It offers a fundamental overview of the regulatory framework and related standards, thereby supporting the roles of an 'intelligent customer'. Additionally, it is pertinent for project engineers and others involved in the installation of new machines or assemblies, as well as those who are accountable for making substantial modifications to existing machinery. While this course aids in comprehending machinery safety responsibilities, it is not meant to substitute for specialised design, engineering, or conformity assessment expertise.
