Overview

Dermal absorption, also known as percutaneous absorption, describes the transport of substances from the outer surface of the skin into the circulatory system, leading to systemic exposure. It is an essential part of the risk assessment of plant protection products (PPPs) and biocide products (BPs), by providing information on level of exposure to active substances and other substances of concern via the dermal route.

This workshop will be delivered over two online sessions and will present and explain the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) 2017 guidance on dermal absorption (applicable in Great Britain), which replaced the previous EFSA guidance document (2012). It will address dermal absorption issues for both Plant Protection Products and Biocidal Products.

Learning outcomes

Delegates will be provided with knowledge and practical guidance to help them:

  • Understand the fundamentals of the skin, its properties and how these affect dermal absorption
  • Understand the 2017 EFSA guidance document and how this applies to both pesticide and biocide products
  • Know how to interpret dermal absorption study data to derive dermal absorption values
  • Understand how to proceed in the absence of dermal absorption data for a formulation
  • Know how to address common problems in dermal absorption evaluations

Topics covered

This workshop provides structured guidance and practical insight into:

  • An overview of the 2017 guidance document
  • The critical aspects of dermal absorption studies and their interpretation
  • Key information frequently absent from, or not clearly presented in, dermal absorption study reports and / or regulatory submissions
  • Worked examples highlighting critical areas of the 2017 guidance
  • Special cases for biocidal products including antifouling products and anticoagulant rodenticides
