Overview
This workshop provides an introduction and overview of ecotoxicological higher tier risk assessments under the GB and NI Plant Protection Product (PPP) regimes. Delegates will explore potential refinement options and undertake practical exercises guided by HSE experts directly involved in dossier evaluation.
The course will combine presentations, case‑based discussions and practical exercises to build confidence in applying higher tier approaches. The workshop will also address the specific risk assessment methodology for combined active substance formulations.
Please note: This workshop will not cover first‑tier risk assessments nor the new EFSA bird, mammal or bee guidance documents, and will primarily focus on the assessment of spray applications.
Learning outcomes
Delegates will be provided with knowledge and practical guidance to help them:
• Understand the principles of higher tier ecotoxicological risk assessment within the GB/NI regulatory frameworks
• Recognise when higher tier refinement options are appropriate and how to apply them effectively
• Interpret and evaluate refinement approaches for individual organism groups
• Understand the risk assessment process for combined active substance formulations
• Apply concepts and methods through practical exercises using realistic scenarios and datasets
What the course will cover
This workshop provides structured guidance and practical insight into:
Higher tier risk assessment for:
• Birds and mammals
• Aquatic organisms
• Bees
• Non‑target arthropods
• Soil organisms
• Non‑target terrestrial plants
